Fady Joudah Talk LO1, A

The Houston poet Dr. Fady Joudah came to the school and gave us a talk about his book “Tethered to Stars”. Before reading this book I had difficulty analyzing poetic devices. Throughout the reading I was able to improve this skill. Having done this allowed me to truly put my understanding of poetic devices to the test, when Dr. Fady Joudah talked about his work. Listening to the way that he expressed himself about the reasoning behind using some poetic devices, allowed me to see the amount of growth that I could have. During the talk I was able to acknowledge my strength of being able to analyze text and I realized that I was able to keep up with the analysis that Dr. Joudah was doing on his own poems. Coming out of this talk I was able to see how my ability to analyze texts allows me to maintain a connection with the author and their writing while I am able to continue to develop the ability to analyze poetic devices.

Dress Code Policy Meeting with Mr. Dorsey LO7, S June 17, 2022 I had a meeting with Mr. Dorsey about the dress code since that is part of his new position. Going into this meeting I was excited to see his thoughts about what to do for the next meeting. When I got to the meeting he presented my a written draft of the new dress code that he and Dr. Quillin had written. This was a whole to me since when I started the committee teachers and students were in agreement that the rewrite of the dress code would happen together. I was conflicted since Dr. Dorsey’s work did speed up the process but I did not include all perspectives. I feared that when we presented to to the committee they would feel betrayed and robbed of the opportunity to contribute to something they were all very passionate on. Thinking of all of this I was able to give him some edits on parts what I knew would not be taken well in the hopes of softening the situation.

LO6, C - Chinese Movie

Chinese Movie LO6, C September 21, 2021 In Chinese class, we watched the movie “Over the Moon”. This movie gives the backstory of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. By watching this movie I was able to learn how Chinese culture is all about family. While I did not learn any new Chinese from this movie I was able to see how much Chinese I was able to understand. In my opinion this was a very good interpretation on what this festival is. This is one of the few movies that I have seen that does not have cultural appropriation or change the culture that the movie is trying to acknowledge. This is a very big concept since there are multiple stereotypes of what Chinese culture is. While I try not to follow the stereotypes that are connected to a culture, I was able to learn a lot from this movie. LO6, S- Planting Trees

Planting Trees LO6, S March 4, 2023 I went to plant trees again, well we didn’t really plant them, we placed mulch on the plant beds. I learned that this provides a level of protection for the plants. Mulch helps to maintain moisture in the plants when there is little rain and prevents weed growth. We also learned about the importance of making sure the mulch is even because an uneven layer allows for weeds to grow in certain areas which take nutrients and water away from the plants. Placing mulch on the plant beds especially in Houston, since the weather is drastically changing and there is constant humidity which weeds love. I learned that while planting trees is an important way to try to stop climate change if the right support is not put into place it doesn’t not matter what you try to do. This is because we need to provide the earth with ways to protect itself from the harm humans cause and nature.
