In the first meeting of the dress code committee, we discussed the bias behind dress codes and how they target female-identifying students. We also discussed how the dress code is reinforced at our school and noticed how it targets female-identifying students that have larger bodies. During this meeting, the members disregarding their point of view on the topic were forced to understand and analyze how our dress code is enforcing negative stereotypes. I presented the importance of body positivity and how if we dress code someone for wearing the exact same thing as someone else and the only difference is their body type, this does not enforce body positivity. This understanding was essential if we wanted to see a positive change in our dress code and the following meetings. With this understanding, we were able to come up with more general terms that we thought should be in our dress code and what aspects needed to be edited.
